THE CITY

Rettan is one of four large farming/fishing cities on the mainland of Bulund. All counted, including children, the city holds nearly 2,000 Intelligent lives, and so the maps should take this into consideration, despite the scale.

THE BACKGROUND

Rettan was established early on in Bulund's long history. Its position near the Taurus Foothills and in the mouth of a large bay made it perfect for trade with some of the first Avontuur vessels that braved the waters east of Renth. Rettan thrived at the end of Bulund's Rising Age and through much of the Silver Age, especially after the destruction of the Trade Gates at Shattered Rock. It wasn't until the Middle Silver Age that a series of calamities lay waste to the northern coast of the continent, including Rettan.

While Bulund's fighting forces were busy on the southern shores, dispatching the Black Evil there in a war that would be rekindled by four subsequent Kings, Rettan was besieged by hundreds of goblins. Small armies of the creatures led by larger, more fearsome humanoids called the Gowern assaulted the City time and time again, destroying the docks in King's Cove and driving out the Intelligent Life there.

Adding insult to injury, Avontuur placed a trade embargo on all of Bulund, naming Rettan and its mismanaged defenses the culprit. King Bos Tau I, first in his family's reign, abandoned Rettan's port and moved Bulund's trade center east to Faudree. In doing so, the King unknowingly pushed the majority of travel and trade away from Bulund's northern region, and the inhabitants of Rettan all the way to Blackstone along the Broken Road have suffered ever since.

Nowadays, Rettan is known as Bulund's Forgotten City. The King's Caravan makes its last stop here during Festival Season, and the goods dispersed are hardly enough to make up for what is taken in tax over the rest of the year. Rettan has little wealth, and anyone who makes money or provides sustenance is carefully guarded by the Guilds that manage the City, so prices and crime tend to run high most of the time.

THE LOCATIONS

( = ) Commonplace ( i.imgur.com/fV0xvYV.jpg ): Rettan has no industrial center nor bustling market. The City hosts lines of buildings that call themselves shops, owned by tricksters that call themselves commoners. Commonplace is where you'd go to find a room for the night or a pair of shoes for the following day, but the room won't be cheap, and the shoes won't be sturdy. It is, however, the closest thing to civility the City holds.

( = ) High Society Gathering: Like most Cities, Rettan has a Keep. Unlike most Cities, Rettan has no Lord. Instead, the oligarchy formed by the City's Guild Leaders, called the High Society, do their 'best' to 'manage' Rettan's goods, services, and citizens from the stone walls of the City's central tower. The large dirt courtyard within the stone walls of the Keep provide enough space for the brief appearance of the King's Caravan every Festival Season as well as limited coverage in the case of a large scale attack.

( = ) The Keystone ( imgur.com/a/5eNfhwt ): Rettan's largest Inn. Its ownership changes almost as frequently as the Seasons. Everyone who takes control over the establishment has grand views of cleaning up the place, as well as the neighborhoods surrounding it, but before long the half-timbered two-story structure is back in the clutches of a guild, and it's not usually the Merchants' Guild.

( = ) Cheerful Giver: This unassuming three-story wooden structure houses the members of Rettan's Bakers' Guild. In a place where grain is difficult to come by, and farming lands are sparse, control of those goods and the methods in which they're produced is crucial. The Bakers' Guild generally holds the most authority around Festival Season, when improper use of food during the cold Visions could mean death.

( = ) Noteworthy: On the south end of Commonplace, Rettan's members of the Artisans' Guild are housed here in a long ivy-covered building spanning a full city block's length. The Artisans' Guild is large, covering all types of hand-crafted goods; tools, furniture, housewares, clothes, even a jewelry shop or two.

( = ) Dockside: The fishing may take place on the waters, but the Fisherman's Guild is far removed from the dangerous shorelines of King's Cove. Dockside is a collection of tall wooden houses built together in Rettan's Commonplace sector. Those who fish the shores or brave the cove to cast nets out of small vessels bring in a good portion of Rettan's food, and they're very well protected for that fact.

( = ) Fairwage: The brick and stone Headquarters of the Rettan Merchants' Guild. Its members make up a large majority of the legal portion of Rettan's industry. Timber, mining, construction, and manual labor all fall under this banner.

( = ) Friend In Need: This decrepit tavern is a front for the only known Thieves' Guild Hall in Rettan. There are several more, but the Guild has done a decent job of maintaining the allure that this paltry cramped space is all the real estate it owns in the City. Over time, it has become a sort of pilgrimage for those curious about the Guild.
