Aboard Acheron

Welcome, traveler, pilgrim, settler, voyager, to the River Acheron.

This game is an experiment. The premise is loosely based on the 2016 film "Passengers". You are a passenger aboard a city-sized spaceship ferrying a small multi-cultural selection of humanity from your home planet to a new world. Crew and passengers all counted, your number is nearly ten thousand.

The River Acheron is an enormous vessel, sleek and slim, miles long, purpose-constructed with every piece in mind for a new civilization. The bed on which you lie is meant to be taken apart, down to the fibers and wiring, as is the rest of the ship, and used in the development of a new society.

The voyage is hundreds of years long. Faster than light travel is not possible, despite what old movies and comics would suggest. But cryo sleep is possible, and on journeys such as this one, it is used well. You and the human crew are meant to slumber for several hundred years before waking to make the ship's final approach.

The only problem is, the company who created and distributed the cryo agent to the passengers made a calculation error in either the math or the anatomy, and the drug is wearing off on specific individuals too soon. As in, three hundred years too soon. Once the initial shock subsides, you come to the following conclusion.

So then, what is there to do? I am so glad you asked.

The ship is piloted, commanded, surveyed, and kept safe by a powerful artificial intelligence named Virgil. Virgil controls everything from the heat shield at the ship's bow which deflects asteroids and debris, to the microwave that heats up your popcorn. On the Acheron, Virgil is as omnipotent and omniscient as one can be.

Virgil is also highly protective of his passengers. Your premature awakening was not part of the plan, but whether you wake up at the predestined time or before it, Virgil will see to your every need. The Acheron is not just a metal hull packed with people and animals, but is a ready-made civilization.

Multiple sectors of the ship are designed for different climates. Virgil has "activated" certain allotments of flora and fauna to be enjoyed by the "Chosen" who have woken up. There are parks, theaters, gyms, restaurants, archery ranges, equestrian fields, libraries, machine shops, space viewing galleries, and more.

Virgil oversees the ship's safety, but the day to day minutia is tended to by a huge workforce of robots and androids. Some wait tables, some sweep floors, some tend to crops, and others venture outside to perform maintenance tasks on space walks. Virgil can broadcast commands and receive transmissions from each of them.
