Zaelia - Golden Age Currency

This forum mainly refers to Bulund.

There is no small task in deciding what something costs or what something is worth. There are several variables, but over time the known world appears to have fallen on a standard by which to measure its wealth.

The Dwarves of Renth predominantly control global trade. They have since the beginning. By the Golden Age, there are other nations and races that are picking up seafaring, but Avontuur Shipping & Trade still has a tight grip on the world's economy.

Horses are rare on the volcanic island of Renth, however they are common in most other places. For this reason, the Renthian gold ingot, a palm sized object cast in molds deep inside the Dwarven treasuries, has been made to be the standard price of a 'good' horse. Now 'good' is subjective, but the standard remains.

SMALLER SETS OF MONEY

Bulund makes use of a few different valuable objects.

Gemshards, small circular ruby or emerald fragments, are mined in Blackstone of Belhem.
Crowns, golden coins the size of a thumbnail, are forged in Taurus Keep of Crownheight
Silver, coins similar in size to Crowns but with various faces or stamps, are created mainly in Urstead of Ferlain.
Onyx pieces are small metacarpal-length rods of the stone taken from deposits on Bastion Isle in Waercet.

For sake of clarity in calculations or reading prices:

1g = 1 Renthian Ingot, or 1 Gold.
10sh = 10 Belhem Gemshards, or 1 Gold.
50c = 50 Bulundian Crowns, or 1 Gold.
250s = 250 Silver, or 1 Gold.
500x = 500 Onyx Pieces, or 1 Gold.

AVERAGE INCOME

Class separation is fairly set in Bulund, with many inhabitants never rising 'above' the class to which they are born. There are exceptions to all rules, however, and so apprentices, squires, or heroes may find themselves working to a level of wealth that their parents or grandparents never imagined.

Of course, with greater wealth comes greater expenses, and so the annual salary of a lord may look like the ability to purchase hundreds of horses, but in reality the bulk of that money would be tied up in staff, servants, guards, guild fees, and miscellaneous taxes.

AVERAGE PRICING

What would a salary mean without knowing the expected prices for your average goods? Most common goods are labeled in amounts of Onyx (x), and so when bartering over eggs or bread, you certainly wouldn't be asked to spend a certain amount of Gold (g) or Shards (sh), or even Crowns (c) or Silver (s). Those measurements are reserved for higher priced items such as clothing or tools.
