Railverse

An old west aetherpunk setting and RPG

Worlds are surrounded by the aether sea, a vast limitless chaotic realm of mystical energy. Humanity and other species that have managed to develop or get a hold of Aether tech are able to traverse the Aether Sea via World Rails, on these ride great marvels of technological development. Trains that allow civilisations to spread across the stars, but some of these are not just limited to the world rails, those are the Explorer Engines, engines able to generate their own rails and explore to new worlds.

--The Back-When Times--
the blanket term for the years before 300 years ago, no memory remains of what that time was like or was, not even among those that were alive back then and now. the primary indicator of something big happening is the development of Aether Tech, World Rails and certain ruins spread across the worlds.

--Aether Tech--
the backbone of modern society. used in weaponry, domestic homes and the various engines that allow people to travel from world to world. this technology was developed in the Back-When Times and so its origin is an unknown, how it works or how to build it is regularly known and still used and even developed however.

--Age of Rediscovery--
The world has so much left unknown from The Back-When Times and many are called to the spirit of adventure to explore these old ruins, fight bandits and aether warped horrors left in the wilderness or temples. there are sometimes even lost pieces of technology to reverse engineer or sell or even both to patent.

--The Aether--
The Aether, a mostly unknown sea or space that surrounds planets. what is known is that its harness able for energy or channelled into magic or even into life forms to mutate and change. the primary interaction people have with the Aether is through one of two ways, sometimes simultaneously. via the World Rails and the trains that ride them. the other is through the various forms of Aether tech, like stoves, aether cars or phones.

--Many Worlds, Few People--
There are many planets in the world, but while there are World Rails to most of them, not all are inhabited, those few that have people living on them are only recently colonised after The Back-When Times. Adventurer types are usually the ones to take regular train trips to these uninhabited worlds as exploratory groups to find something new or useful.

--The Wendigo--
The grand threat to the world which none of course know the origin of are The Wendigo, sometimes called The Wild Hunt or Ghost Horde. many uninhabited worlds are considered to be the result of this force but what they are has yet to be answered. Wendigo individually are ghostly entities that possess people, malevolent spirits that force their host into a cannibalistic frenzy, some even start to mutate. through this they ravage worlds and their populations until nothing is left, then leave for the aether to find a new world. often if there is a hint that a world is showing signs of a Wendigo scourge, the World Rails are closed and any trains in or out are not permitted.

==Races==

--Humans--
Most widespread race in the railverse, usually at the forefront of exploration.

--Dreska--
Reptilian people who are tough and stubborn as stone. Special minerals in their bones and scales makes them surprisingly resistant to damage which usually increases with regular experience in conflicts. They are also found often at the most hospitable worlds. They live to be about 200 years old.

--Vortak--
The Vortak are an unusual and unknown race of the undead, raised not by magic but by pure Aether, these usually occur during Aether storms, when the atmosphere opens up to let the outside in. the energy enters and fills one or multiple corpses, rising them once again. They are basically new people however with the barest of glimpses of their previous life. its difficult to distinguish them from normal members of their species except their white or rainbow coloured hair and blood.
