Sovereign Planets Fluff

pyrak Nov '16  /  edited Nov '16
Recently the Human Empire took a major blow and having to draw back its border, has left many planets free from previous ownership. Many were terraformed by the humans themselves, however there were quite a number of already inhabited planets which they subjugated.

And you are one of the subjugated planets that has finally been freed from the tyrant of the humans. After several years of rebuilding your people and your world, it's time to once again head for the stars and do whatever you're bloody planning on doing amongst the stars.

Or perhaps you're one of the human worlds. Maybe you're hoping to rebuild the human empire and reestablish the galaxy spanning rotten, corrupt, I mean glorious and advanced Human Empire. If that's not your objective, maybe you want to be a independent planet yourself and are satisfied with the status quo.

Some of you will take this newly granted freedom to and use it to build your own armada of war machines. With Stardrives pointed homeward and weapon bristling prow towards your neighbors, you are Warmongers. Perhaps you're on a holy crusade, or maybe your people are just straight up marauders. Whatever your reasoning or cause is you have to hit hard and fast or else your more pacifist neighbors might have strong enough defense to throw off your attacks.

Others will seek to continue to rebuild not only on their world, not on the inhabitable places nearby. These people are Workers, people who have maximized their efforts in rebuilding and as thus gone so far as to even drain their world of resources, forcing them to rely on new, unexploited, resources. However more often than not these civilizations are ruled by people proficient in the ways of manipulation and trickery (aka the media), aimed both at their own people and at their enemies. To make their segmented economy better, these people have managed to make Gates large enough that they can send entire ships through them.

The third and defiantly not least, though defiantly the slowest, Thinkers. Weak to begin with, but when armed with science and technology they are nigh-unstoppable. Not to get their hands dirty these people don't do things directly themselves, but would rather have machinery do the work for them.

Thanks to various advances in technology, the construction and use of massive starship is possible. However there is yet to be a discovered effective means of faster than light travel beyond the use of a a Gate which are extremely power demanding and limited in use, requiring one at each end. None the less the technology is used and is effective for the transportation of resources between different points inside a solar system or even small star clusters. Some people have gone so far as to make Gates big enough that they can transport ships between planetary bodies.

However as far as starships go, ever since the Human Empire's fall, caused by the collapse of the massive interplanetary system Gate network due to an unknown cause, they're still drudging along at sublight speeds with hibernation crews. This makes even interplanetary travel complex at the least, and a very long and enduring process. Most ships are perfectly capable of travelling at immense speeds, and do so just fine. However this leave them more than just vulnerable to objects in space, or a well placed cluster of laser fire which could more than easily tear their hulls to shreds. That being said, since a vehicle's mass effects their momentum, larger vessels have to go slower or else risk paying the price.
