This forum is meant for use by the party in the "What Makes A Hero?" pre-campaign.

Quick word of thanks to edward for finding most of the reference pictures that are perfect for Bulund's early Golden Age.

THE CITY

Giblund is one of four large farming/fishing cities on the mainland of Bulund. All counted, including children, the city holds nearly 1,000 Intelligent lives, and so the maps should take this into consideration, despite the scale.

THE BACKGROUND

Giblund got its start when a group of fishermen moved southward from Faudree and toward the central western bank of the Red River. As a blossoming but unprotected fishing community, it turned out to be a prime target for a group of trolls in the area.

One of the founders of the village, a Halfling named Gib, made a stand on a hill near the center of the small town and killed two trolls himself before dying there. With his sacrifice, the town was secure and the name was set.

Gib's Hill is the most populated and wealthy section of Giblund, a winding road of stone and wooden structures just north of the main trade and vocational alleys.

THE LOCATIONS

( = ) Gib's Hill ( imgur.com/a/txEE2 , i.imgur.com/Gru0sys.jpg ): The wealthy district of Giblund, home to its nobility and well to do folk. The place of festivals, public meetings, and the occasional sighting of Lord Feln and Lady Tilva.

( = ) Troll's Tooth Tavern ( imgur.com/a/CqlUb6t ): Dark timber, ages old, make up the structure of the place, and the thick thatch insulation gives off an earthy smell, despite the decades of smoke the place has absorbed. Low conversations can be heard from corner tables at any time of day or night. The heavy wax candles lining the tables and rafters drip all over the floor, which is otherwise swept clean.

( = ) Lord's Estate ( front gate: imgur.com/a/k8t0vs3 ): The house and estate of Giblund's Lord and Lady. The current lord, Feln, is disliked by several among the city, both noble and common, and thus is usually found in this sprawling estate. The area is stone-walled, with four guard's shacks at either corner, a garrison for Feln's personal men, and a front lawn upon which sits the large stone home. Dozens of rooms, half a dozen bedrooms, and at least as many private baths, the house boasts several amenities unavailable to most of Giblund's citizens.

( = ) Trader's Row ( imgur.com/PjBmNjo , imgur.com/a/TuvQoOC ): Near the southern edge of town lies the collection of alleys and narrow streets that hosts every type of vocation and trade the city could need to survive, with a few exceptions that lie just outside the city's limits. These wall-sharing shops include a smith, an armorer, two bakeries, a butchery, hunting and fishing shop, an apothecary, and two clothiers.

( = ) Outer Limits ( i.imgur.com/paikPo3.jpg , imgur.com/a/5BQxGGc ): Outside the city limits are a few important staples of Giblund. Farmer Hamor tends a farm to the southwest of town, Master Vacca owns a stable and modest crop to the west of the city, and Carden owns a fishing and hunting shop on the bank of the Red River, to the east. Along with these places of business, there are several homes and communities on the outer edge of Giblund. There are also, unfortunately, a few 'unsavory' parts of the city, including a tall stone-and-wood structure on a dark forest-shrouded hill, called the Witch tower. The Witch of Giblund is only myth and legend, say most folks. But oddly enough, even the City Guards refuse to approach the hill or go any further than the abandoned house down at the bottom. No one visits the tower; that's for sure.

THE QUESTS

The Heroes' Guild is always taking on new work, doing whatever they can to help the city of Giblund and all its people (the nice ones, at least). This list of quests serves the dual purpose of informing the Guild members of their completed tasks as well as alerting them of available adventures. However, this list, much like the world, is always changing!

.
( = ) Completed/Failed
.

... = Retrieve Liza's Teddy Bear. COMPLETED
Young Liza had her bear taken from her. The Heroes fought against the Giblund Crooks to get it back for her.

... = Rescue Liza and Parvos. COMPLETED
Liza's in trouble again, this time along with Parvos. The Giblund Crooks captured them both and led the Heroes on a goose chase through the city, wrecking the Guild, planting evidence at Witchtower Hill, the Docks, and Spider Grove, where the Heroes fought off several large bugs.

... = Stand Trial Against Feln/Showdown at Witchtower Hill. COMPLETED
The Heroes gave their opinions on the fate of the Crooks, swaying the crowd to side with children instead of the city's Lord. Angered, Feln left the scene. Later, the children chased Butch and Anala to Witchtower Hill, where the Witch herself appeared after a series of magic illusions and 'took' Butch.

... = A Snowball Massacre/Hamor's Crops. COMPLETED
The Heroes led the Crooks into a snowball ambush and left them bloody and teary-eyed. Later, they rescued Thresh from Farmer Hamor's barn and a nest of huge Barn Wasps.

... = Blackleaf Root. COMPLETED
The Heroes sought information on the Blackleaf Tree that led them to Witchtower Hill, where they valiantly fought off the large tree and its many ensnaring roots to retrieve the Blackleaf Root from the trunk of the tree. They returned to Mathilda's Brews and gave the much-needed ingredient to Mathilda, ensuring Thresh's life was saved.

... = In Search of the King. COMPLETED
Snow has covered the city, and possibly the whole country! In an effort to aid a search party, the Heroes helped Arnaud the Armorer and Carden the Butcher to load up armored bulls carrying Men and supplies that headed out on the dangerous Southern Road to find His Majesty, all the while fighting off wolves, frostbite, and exhaustion.

... = A Most Unsettling Morn. COMPLETED
The Search Party sent to find the King has not come back, and the City is
low on supplies and food. Without help of the King's Caravan, making it through Festival Season would be difficult. Lord Feln ordered one hundred Men to head out on the road, and the Heroes took it upon themselves to aid as well, working their way through the forest and across the road to beat The Hundred to the King's Caravan, with a little help from Harry's new soul-bonded companion, a Bulundian Taurus Bull.

... = One Stop Trip to Giblund. COMPLETED
Our Heroes left His Majesty in the hands of Duke Galahad and the Caravan Guards, deciding instead to accompany Arnaud and Captain Gorwin on their search of the missing Hundred. After visits to a ransacked camp, a cave of goblins, and an irritable kidnapping Stronghold Clan, the Heroes helped Commander Orril Blackland negotiate for the release of Master Dunnov the smith, and they returned home to Giblund with no casualties, only to hear that Lord Feln had fled the City upon the King's arrival.

... = Master Vacca's Stables. COMPLETED
The Heroes fixed Vacca's broken horse pens, carefully hammering in heavy fence posts while keeping the Horses from being frightened, even when assaulted by snowballs from the Crooks!

... = A Dinner Party. COMPLETED
The Heroes donned their best outfits and scrubbed themselves clean for a night of fun, food, and fanfare at the Blackland manor. Soon after arriving, the group fell into a session of jokes and stories, led by Annette, Leoreak, and Eric, while Sir Orril, Captain Gorwin, and a few others retired upstairs for privacy. The night ended with yet another showdown between the Crooks and the Heroes, although this time, the violence was swapped (mostly) for words, and the groups established a shaky truce grounded on the shared motive of finding Butch.

... = A Visit to the Witch. COMPLETED
In possibly their most dangerous quest yet, the Heroes took it upon themselves to visit Witchtower Hill once more, this time with the intention of both seeing the Witch. While a group of Heroes and Crooks alike distracted her outside with spells and shouts, a reconnaissance team of Harry, Leoreak, and Anala crept to the side of the tower and retrieved Butch from the Witch's grasp. However, the team did not make it out unscathed. Trisk the Crook was held captive by a spell and was forced to bludgeon Ward, nearly to death. Ward's life is now in the hands of Mathilda.

... = The Festival! COMPLETED
The King and Lord Orril made an appearance at the city-wide celebration to speak to the crowds and award the Heroes with one King's Order letter each. The Heroes participated in duels and eating competitions until late in the evening, when the crowds began to dissipate.

. . . = The Paths Laid Before Us (Castiel and Azra Time Skip)
Can a friendship between two would-be knights, born in the crucible of combat and strengthened in the sparring square, survive the strain of forced separation? The Guild that brought them together stands on the same ground as the City that drove them apart.

. . . = Thicker Than Blood (Leoreak and Harry Time Skip)
Some stories are marked by fortune and fame. Others are marked by death and loss. These friends, having lived for years on opposite sides of the continent, can only hope that their lives have a bit more of the fortune than death from now on.

. . . = Hidden Essence (Eric and Annette Time Skip)
Touched individuals are a rare breed. Those who possess these strange abilities, while the powers themselves are greatly different, share a common bond. An unspoken truth. How fortunate are our two Mystics that they share this bond with not only each other, but all of our Heroes?

Nostalgia... Reminiscence... A longing for better days, perhaps... Not much else can be gleaned from the past besides memories and dust, friends. There is a finality to all things.
