An idea for sci-fi

thunderstar Sep '17  /  edited Feb '18
Thunder's Note: I went on a tangent in the glade about sci-fi, had an idea for a table, and thought I should save the idea... so, read this if ya want, but feel free to ignore it otherwise. I will probably not host sci-fi.

My idea isn't a *universal* (pun intended) fix to the problem with all sci-fi tables, but a good alternative for it. With that being mentioned, I should probably eventually make a forum post about the problem with all (to my experience) sci-fi tables on FT.

=My Idea=
The player characters are from a planet on the outskirts of the galactic empire (or whatever), where their technology is lacking, space travel is rare, and technology is relatively simple compared to other planets.

You can start the RPG off on their home planet (this could last the first half of a session, or a couple sessions even). This is so the players have a good understanding and a connection to the world from which their characters were born and lived.

The characters then get the opportunity to travel into space and see other planets. Whether an army needs soldiers and they turned to your small planet for new recruits, or a recreational space-bus was accepting a life's savings worth of payment for a tour of the galaxy, whatever it may be, the characters now have the chance to leave their home planet and go on an adventure.

The player characters have an understanding of their world as do the players. The characters and the players are being introduced into the sci-fi universe of high-technology, space battles, alien races, etc. at the same time the players are. This way, the GM can do as much complex world-building, lore, and backstory as he/she wants without having to make all the players read and learn it. The players' homeworld is relatively simple, so it requires only a short prologue, simple cc, and little knowledge of the worlds, tech, and races around them.
