The Fabletop Wrestling Federation

oman1666 Oct '15  /  edited Nov '15
The Fabletop Wrestling Federation is a small, independent, sports entertainment wrestling company. It was recently started by Oliver Mann (Mr. O. Mann) and you are one of it's performers as a professional wrestler. The company performs in small venues around the world, and also records all matches for its youtube channel, through which is generates some money in add revenue.

Your job is to provide entertainment for the fans by wrestling with other superstars. You want to make these matches as compelling and interesting as possible and tell stories with them. Wrestling is of course, fake, so you are not actually hurting each other or trying to win. Often the result of the match is determined before it even begins. If you entertain the fans well and impress Mr. Mann, you may find yourself popular with the fans, and in the running for championship gold!

Character Creation / How things work

This game is in fact, a core fabletop game, using all the rules of typical fabletop. However, as it does not include any actual combat, and the setting is a little more complicated, the rolls can be a bit a more confusing. Because of this, the GM will ask for any rolls they feel are necessarily.

Some typical rolls might be as follows:
Are you strong enough to safely lift and throw your opponent? (might)
Can you endure the pain you're in and continue the match? (might)
Are you able to safely and successfully back-flip off the top rope? (agility)
Do you react and tuck quick and safely enough to not break your neck when your opponent slams you? (agility)
How convincing is your acting that your opponent just hurt you? (Wisdom)
Can you control and judge your move in a way where you nearly hit your opponent, instead of clobbering them? (Wisdom)

Traits are also in use in the usual way, but you may wish to simply name your traits instead of giving a descriptor to it, and the GM can decide when it would be appropriate. Using your major trait as a fighting style and minor trait as a gimmick is a good format to follow.

Some example fighting style traits (I recommend you use one of these):
Powerhouse: 1 - Big and strong, skilled at lifts.
Brawler: 1 - puts on exciting and convincing fist fights with good control, sells opponent's strikes well.
High Flyer: 1 - Extra fast and agile, leaps off the top rope and runs around
Showman: 1 - extra convincing when selling, and gets extra reaction from the crowd
Hardcore: 1 - Skill at swinging and taking bumps from foreign objects, increases pain threshold
Technical: 1 - Extra skill when performing submission holds, and technical old school wrestling fetes like lock ups and suplexes

Some example gimmicks (use one of these if you're stuck, but come up with your own if you can!)

Dancer Gimmick: 1 - often dances during matches, avoiding attacks or provoking a fan reaction
Genius Gimmick: 1 - A master of clever, unexpected moves and manipulation of others
Foreign Gimmick: 1 - plays up to the stereotypes of their home nation. This trait is best adapted and customised by country. E.g. An English wrestler might throw a cup of hot tea into someone's face and add this trait.
Monster Gimmick: 1 - Intimidating and extra tough
People's Hero Gimmick: 1 - Gets the crowd on their side, and performs winning moves at vital moments with ease
Giant Gimmick: 1 - Extra big, strong and tough
Little Man Gimmick: 1 - Extra small, quick and nimble, quite an underdog
Power Gimmick: 1 - Projects wealth or status. May bribe officials or employ minions to aid them.
Clown Gimmick: 1 - Plays pranks and tricks on their opponent
Animal Gimmick: 1 - Takes on certain animistic traits and may attack savagely! (Best customised to a single animal like a wolf, bird, crocodile etc.)
Job Gimmick: 1 - A gimmick based on a specific real world job, like a prison officer who tackles, hand cuffs and uses a baton on opponents, or a chef who throws spices into the eyes of his foe.
Scary Gimmick: 1 - Plays mind games and employs tricks to frighten their opponent.

Power in this game works as a normal.
Life represents how much of a beating you can take in the ring. Occasionally moves will go wrong, or big impressive moves will require you to take some pain and your life will deplete. If your life hits 0, your wrestler will face an injury of some kind, and the match will have to be ended at once to rush them to hospital.

Please don't forget to add a desc for your character. Ideally, this description should outline the character's in-ring persona. If you're feeling extra brave, you can also talk about the person playing the wrestler.

In your notes section, please put if you are a Face or a Heel. Faces are the good guys of wrestling, that the fans cheer, whilst Heels are the villains that the fans boo.

Story Telling

On it's most basic level, your match should tell a story. E.g. One player is a big guy who likes to bully other superstars, whilst another is a smaller superstar who stands up to him!

Outside of one match, greater stories can be told through feuds and rivalries between superstars that spam several matches, and through promos that are cut.

Promos are all the parts of a wrestling show that aren't wrestling (the acting talking bits) two wrestlers might meet back stage, or one may be interviewed etc. These are often good chances to develop your character. Some examples of promos are:

-An interview backstage
-One superstar interviews another.
-2 or more superstars talk in the locker room
-A superstar goes to the ring to address an issue or call someone out
-A superstar goes to visit General Manager Oliver Mann for reprimand or to request a specific match.

A promo could...
-Establish yourself and another superstar as allies or a tag team.
-Establish yourself and another superstar as enemies or begin a rivalry with them.
-Show that your character is a 'face' (good guy) or 'heel' (villain)
-Turn your character from a face or a heel or vice-versa
-Develop your character's personality or a gimmick they are employing
-Build hype for an upcoming match
-Amuse the fans

Player Polls

To improve the game, I offer players a chance to vote.

In a previous poll we decided to add some GM controlled wrestlers (Trent and Karla) to the roster, so even if only one person shows up, there's someone to fight. We also decided these wrestlers should have character sheets.

In this next poll, help me out with some rule changes: strawpoll.me/6073606
