Pantheon - The Legends of the Demigods

funnio987 May '17  /  edited May '17
Demigods, mortal beings gifted with godhood by their chosen god. Some, direct descendants of gods, some granted the power.
One thing is known for each demigod however, greatness seems to be destined from their very birth. The legends of the demigods, based on the civilizations they interacted with, are detailed below.
Demigods will be added after their deaths and after sufficient time has passed for their legend to spread and cultivate. Written from a mortal viewpoint, so certain things may not be included.

Korin, 'the Child of Light.'
Years Active: -98 Ancient to 26 Dark (Age 124)
Race: Outlier

The exact way Korin came about in the world is of debate - with stories ranging from the God of Light visiting Korin's mother one lonely night to Korin simply being found as a child.
Though his origins are shrouded in mystery, it was clear he was no ordinary mortal. An Outlier, though stronger, taller and perhaps even smarter. Legends tell he wielded a weapon forged from the God of Light's divinity, one capable of striking down anything. It was a weapon of the finest craftmanship, and depending on whom tells it, it even had the power to give dominion over light itself. Some even speak of him having a guardian angel, gifted to him as a child.
Much of his younger life is unknown with his mother passing at a young age. But when news spread amongst the warring tribes that Korin had conquered his first village singlehandedly, the response was mixed. Some were enamored with his tale, flocking to his banner. Others, wary.
After decades of perpetual war, before long Korin had united the once-warring tribes of the Outliers under a single banner. When questioned about his cause, he merely stated 'it was merely one part of my destiny.'
The first of many High Chiefs, the Outlier tribes prospered under his rule. Many tales were borne of his deeds, such as 'the great taming of the beasts' or 'the rejection of the blight.'
It was Korin who led the protection of his people during the Age of Darkness (not to be confused with the Dark Age), where it was told that in the god's silence he was the beacon of light for his people. According to texts found during this period of time, he had apparently fought countless hordes of demons, armies of beasts unimaginable and cruel mimicries of demigods.
He singlehandedly led and defended the Outliers throughout the 50 years of the Age of Darkness. In this time his sword, 'Tuli' was given it's name due to it's apparent light-wielding properties. Some sources state Korin lost Tuli during a battle with a demigod-like being. Whatever the method of loss, Tuli was never seen in Korin's possession ever again.
When the Age of Darkness passed and the first godly act was sighted in over 50 years, Korin had (according to recounted texts), apparently 'fell to his knees - exhausted from his years of service.'
Though demigods are known for their long lifespans, Korin was nearing 95 by this point - the longest living demigod thus far. In the years following he would spend most of his time in solitude, resting in bed.
For reasons unknown at the time, in a shocking revelation Korin revealed to his people that his time as High Chief was coming to an end and in his place he would elect a new one in the years to come. During this time he had taken in a young child and took her under his wing as her study - though unknown then, this child would eventually grow into Strindende, 'the Far-Seer.'
After years of living past his natural age, Korin passed peacefully in his sleep at the age of 124. It is said that when his essence passed on from the mortal plane to the divine, the world was bathed in light - shining all places in the world. This was his final godly act, and the final chapter of Korin, the first High Chief of the Outliers and protector of his people.

Jumala 'the Champion of the Aquarians'
Years Active: -78 Ancient to 44 Dark (Age: 122)
Race: Aquarian

A unique case in comparison to other demigods, Jumala was once a mortal, entirely separate from the divine realm. Born a male, Jumala was a denizen from the very first establishments of the Aquarians. After proving his worth to the first king of the Aquarians, he was hailed as the Paramount Warrior of the kingdom. An example for all to strive to become, Jumala was a man of great honour – the very face of chivalry for his people. He was incredibly close with the ruling monarch, even being assigned to protect the royal family personally along with his own contingent of guards.
It is theorised that the God of Water had gained personal interest in the warrior and forged what would now be known as ‘Tempest’s Echo,’ the second divine weapon to appear to mortals. Tempest’s Echo, a spear infused with the Water God’s own divinity, had at one point appeared to Jumala. Though accounts differ, the most common belief is that the weapon had appeared to Jumala while he was guarding the royal family during a tour through the city. In a freak turn of events, the Paramount Warrior took grasp of the spear – believing it to have been lost by one of his men. Once he had taken hold of it, the power of the spear was far too much for the aquarian and warped him into a form capable of wielding it. An enormous aquatic-serpent like creature, though still visually aquarian. According to certain texts, in this release of power those around him ‘simply ceased to exist.’ The entire royal family, including the king as well as his royal guards were all gone in the shortest amount of time.
Once the now-demigod regained consciousness and realised what had happened, he went into a frenzy. Using his newfound powers thanks to the spear, he summoned the power of his god and ravaged his city and the coastline beside it, resulting in the ruination of the First City of the Aquarians. Those that survived took refuge in nearby caves, establishing another home for their people. In this time Jumala, once Paramount Warrior of his people, was titled ‘the Demon of the Sea.’ Jumala would often raid the Aquarians, cannibalising them in order to satiate his uncontrollable hunger. In later times Jumala would state that she does not remember much of these times, stating that she had no control over her actions.
Most sources of that time state that during a raid on the aquarians Jumala was beset by what could only be described as ‘the brightest light one could ever imagine.’ Though the Demon of the Sea had attempted to resist, his power was nothing comparable to what it was attacked by. The serpent was returned to the form of an aquarian once more, but a few noticeable changes had been made. Jumala was now a woman, equipped with finely crafted armour unlike anything the aquarians were able to forge at the time. Though her people were wary of her, Jumala eventually regained the trust of her people through protecting them from the swarm raids with her immense powers, even helping rebuild the city when needed. Jumala had seemingly returned, and it was not long before she was named the highest honour a warrior could achieve, created specifically for her. ‘The Champion of the Aquarians.’ She was the defender of her people, and would continue to serve her duty with unbridled confidence, always prevailing against whatever the gods threw at her.
Apparently warned by the God of Water themself, Jumala erected a large shield around the city – with her in the epicentre, holding it up. Both the Champion and her people were unaware of what was to come, but it was not long before they found out. The Age of Darkness was released upon the world soon after. It is said in the fifty years the darkness lasted that she had fallen into an eternal trance to keep the shield lasting. The shield protected the city from the corrupted ooze that had spread into the oceans, as well as aquatic creatures of unimaginable size and terror. The Temple of Jumala was erected around the woman, with many paying tribute in the hopes that the shield would never fall. When the oceans were blessed with rainfall once more and the ooze dispelled, Jumala’s shield dispersed. Though celebrations were held, Jumala would not awaken from her trance. Though she was alive, she was in a slumber she would not awaken from. She was kept inside of the Temple of Jumala where she was kept and taken care of by her hundreds of followers.
In her slumber it is believed that she was beset by constant nightmares, with the first months of her coma being filled with her unrelenting screams. She was often restrained, though in one particular night she had clawed at her throat and removed her own voice box. Her divine healing had recovered the next day but the next night she attacked her larynx once more. This cycle continued for two months before her throat simply stopped recovering. She no longer screamed but her pain was evident through her empty mouthing. The clawing would eventually extend to her entire body, leaving scars where her nails had once scratched.
The Cult of Jumala – a cult formed during her shield trance, sought to awaken her from her coma, brewing a potion supposedly filled with the divinity of the Water God themself. This potion was eventually stolen however, though the identity of which is still up to debate. Scholars theorise it to be a particular individual from the Hoopste caste – one of the most powerful water wielders of the aquarians.
Perhaps the potion could have healed the demigod. Unfortunately the world will never know. In the year 44 Dark, Jumala was said to have peacefully passed in her bed. She was aged 122 at the time of death and had defended her people for more than most have even lived. She lived both lives, one of a mortal and one of a demigod. The legends of ‘the First Champion’ are still told throughout the lands and the oceans. Though Jumala is gone, Tempest’s Echo still continues to choose more wielders of the spear. The Champions of the Aquarians all wield the spear, with legends accompanying each individual. Though more is surely to be chosen, the First Champion will surely be remembered for setting the path for both her people and her successors.
