Archangels

oman1666 Jan '18
Archangels is an (almost) core rules campaign, that fuses sci-fi and fantasy.

Please note that 'core rules' DOES NOT mean 'no custom traits'. in fact, custom traits are mandatory.

If you have not already done so, please make sure you read fabletop's 'How to Play' to get a grasp of the basic rules of the game.

Character creation is pretty by-the-book. However, in addition to their two custom traits, player select and add a racial trait of their choice from the list of the playable races further down the forum.

Both Sci-fi and Fantasy characters will appear in this campaign, and to try and encourage variety, only 3 characters from each setting will be allowed in the game at a given time. To justify the same initial power levels, fantasy characters should be great heroes of their world, where as Sci-fi characters would be just above average citizens.

Background: Fantasy Characters

On a world known as Phantas, the four free races live in fear. The Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings pray that the eyes of the Dark Queen shall not look upon them. Already the weak willed Orcs have fallen under her control, and the north of the world is a desolate land where it is said demons roam. No one ever ventures that way and returns to tell the tale.

Little is known of the Dark Queen, other than that she dwells to the north, and possess a power beyond the imagination of the strongest sorcerer. If ever she were to mount a full scale invasion of the free races, they would surely be wiped out within mere days. For now, however, she seems content to take a prisoner here or there... and to bide her time.

Phantas is a world of many dangers and secrets. Owlbears and Dragons stalk the country side, preying on unprepared travellers, ancient steel temples of long forgotten races who came before litter the land - most of them now but hollow shells. But, most mysterious of all is mana. This invisible force radiates throughout the world, and allows its wielder to do just about anything they put their mind to. Some people, usually those of great intellect, have greater control of mana, but it also appears that mana, to an extent, chooses its own master. It is even true that some places - the Elven lands, and the ancient temples, seem to be more favourable for these magical abilities.

All the races have their great heroes. Strong and mighty dwarves with unbending will. Clever Gnomes who salvage ancient artefacts of great power. Elves wise and fair, who know the secrets of mana. And humble halflings, who do what they can. Some heroes are masters of their weapon, others wield the mana of the world to their own ends.

Despite the overwhelming strength of the Dark Queen, there is some hope. Long ago, an ancient golem spoke a prophecy of the end of her reign;
"A steel dragon shall fall from the sky, and its riders shall be great beings from another world. Amongst these beings shall be the Archangels, heroes of great power who shall unite the people of Phantas to finally banish The Dark Queen and usher in an age of peace and prosperity."

It seems these times are upon us... for such a dragon were seen falling from the sky just three days ago. Quickly, a band of heroes from amongst all races formed a party, and set off across dangerous wilderness to find where they landed!

Background: Sci-Fi characters

In the latter part of the 22nd century, the secret to worm hole generation was discovered by a team of Earth's finest minds, and life on Earth changed forever. The initial challenge of creating a worm hole is great, but once one is created, travel between two points in space can be instantaneous!

A daring mission was launched across several of Earth's nations, to travel to the next solar system and punch a wormhole between it and Earth. The hope was that this would be the first step to interstellar travel for the common man... what they discovered was greater still; the first system visited contained two earth like planets, and two intelligent civilisations!

First contact was with the Oryx, who resemble some form of humanoid deer and antelope (other civilisations are as varied in appearances and cultures as the many nations of earth). The Oryx were a strange sight to behold; herbivores who were far from the top of the planet's food chain. They had built cities with high walls, that kept out hungry elephant-sized big cats that stalked the rest of their planet. Their technology was a few centuries behind that of humanity, but with some help from their new neighbours, they soon caught up. The Oryx were a kind and friendly people, with a great love of art and music. They got along with humanity from the start, and soon the forty-five nations of the Oryxian planet Kharlax were merged with Earth's United Nations.

The Pugna were somewhat harder to win over; the planet of Ta'hos was a hostile world of swamps and poisonous gases. It was a world where survival was simply impossible for the weak; and this made it's inhabitants tough. What few resources the planet contained were fiercely contested by warring tribes of great warriors. The muddy landscape made large cities impracticable and war was a daily constant, so technology took a different path. Guns, grenades and other means of killing progressed at a rapid rate, whilst medicine and computing didn't progress past a rudimentary level. So this day, this is still the way that many of the proud Pugnarian people live, but some tribes were convinced by humanity to try a different way of life, those that did found their life expectancy increase significantly, and the other races found themselves protected by the most skilled warriors they had ever seen.

The Virdinem were another story entirely... humanity didn't find them; they found humanity. From a home planet four star systems away, they had already established small colonies across these stars, they had been looking for intelligent life, but found none. They were ecstatic with the discovery they made when they came across this new alliance of Humans, Oryx and Pugna. Humanity were initially suspicious of the Virdinem, they resembled ancient descriptions of aliens from their home world - little men, with large heads and large black eyes. Their technology surpassed that of even humanity. In time, it became clear to humanity that they were indeed peaceful, and here to benefit and help this new alliance of planets. When pressed on the question of earlier alien sightings on Earth, the Virdinem confessed to experimental technology some two centuries prior, which had seen worm holes close behind its scouting ships. It was not impossible that some of these ships, separated from their home, had gone rogue, but the truth is still largely unknown.

A merger of the United Nations, and the Virdinem equivalent saw a new council of nations formed; The United People of the Milky Way, or UPMW. Interstellar travel was put on the back burner for a while, as these four nations spent time to know each other, and learn how each could help the other. Politics became an even more complicated game with new peoples to meet and histories to learn, but in time the alliance they formed was strong.

Midway through the twenty-third century, it was decided to continue space exploration... and so came a new mission. A new fleet of ships would fly forth, representing all known peoples, to create more worm-holes and find more intelligent races out there. In an ambitious move, a new city sized vessel was built to make this long journey in style. Many names for the ship were pitched, and in the end the chosen winner was 'The Archangel'

The Story So Far

24/1/18
Ike, a cybernetics surgeon of the Archangel, and Grimyol, a pugna sniper, awoke in the wreck of their escape pod, to find themselves surrounded by Kobolds. They were rescued by a brave knight, Caidi, who had come to find the heroes of her people's prophecy. However, before this could be discussed, a band of Orcish raiders approached the party. They were led by an orc called Korblood, who went by many titles. This orc's entire left arm turned out to be a cybernetic component of unknown origin that contains a flame thrower. The orcs were eventually routed, but not before Grimyol was seriously injured as a sword was plunged through his spine. He won't be able to walk until he gets serious medical attention.

27/1/18
Caidi took to her steed, a magnificent unicorn and rode off to find help! Shortly she left, help instead found Grimyol and Ike! Not far from the crash site were two more of the ships crew, Frolo, a Virdinem diplomat, and Keeper, a human scientist, they had fallen out of the escape pod and landed in the tops of nearby trees, they were found and assisted by a native, the Gnome Kasvar.

The first problem the party faced was getting Grimyol out of the crater! The Pugna was huge and heavy and the terrain steep. After a couple of failed attempts to get him out on a stretcher, Kasvar intervened... casting a spell on the stretcher! The crew of the Archangel were amazed to see what happened, as the stretcher suddenly grew lighter... could it really be magic?

Grimyol was lifted to safety, and the party headed for a nearby inn, that was unfortunately unknown to Caidi when she rode off to get help. To the dismay of the party, a band of Orc raiders were trying to break into the inn, looking for Off-Worlders.

A chaotic fight followed, with Grimyol trying to fight from the floor as the less experienced fighters of the group fumbled with their guns and crossbows. Eventually however, they proved a superior force to the orcs. The orcs were all killed, even the Orc that surrendered was slaughtered by Kasvar, dismissing the life form as a servant of The Dark Queen.

Ike saw to the wounds of the Dwarves who ran the inn, and was revered at the Archangel Isaac by them due to his miraculous healing abilities. It seems these natives are a religious people. With several of their number badly wounded, the party turned in for the night, ready to piece everything together in the morning.

2/2/18

Using a communications device, Ike was able to make contact with other survivors of the Archangel. A pugna mercenary named Nemora and a military robot, designated Avril. These two, and a native Dwarf, Lusdrink, rendezvoused with the doctor at the inn.

With the surrounding area in chaos from Orcish raiders, the party decided to try and cross a nearby river and make for either the Elven city of Elkhaven or the Dwarven hall of Copperholm. Meanwhile, the others would find transport for the wounded Grimyol and meet them there. They found crossing the river challenging, and so added half a day to their journey by following the river south to a bridge. Here, they came under ambush as they attempted a night time crossing!

Korblood, and a new band of Orcs appeared from their hiding places, and tried again to apprehend the party. Ike got into a grappling match with Korblood, cybernetic arm on cybernetic arm, as the others fended off the other raiders. The orcs were slaughtered, leading to Korblood trying to escape. Ike, however, proved too strong for him, allowing Nemora to line up a head shot! Korblood was knocked out cold and half of his face badly burnt and disfigured by the blast. But, just as Ike was going to make the killing blow (keen to dissect the Orc and learn the secrets of its very advanced arm), Korblood disappeared. It is suspected that some sort of teleporter... technology the UPMW has not yet developed, was the cause of this.

19/2/18

The party continued their journey, travelling by night to Elkhaven. On their way, they encountered Phantas' apex nocturnal predator; the owl bear. The beast causes heavy damage to Nemora, but eventually was forced to retreat, heavily wounded.

Arriving at Elkhaven, the town's Captain of the Guard Gawain met the party and greeted them with honor, reveling them as angels. The party had many questions about the ancient prophecies of this world, which tells of Angels falling from the sky to defeat the Dark Queen. Ike, it was revealed, is mentioned specifically by name in these prophecies, which speak of Archangel Isaac, Ike of Heaven's Fist.

The party split up and went about their own adventures in the town. Ike went to see a wise-man and magician named Thaddeus, with whom he discussed the basic principles of magic. Ike found that with some basic tuition, he was able to move tea cup through will power alone. Nemora meanwhile, wished to spar; Gawain took personal honour from this and lost to the Pugna's superior strength. A medic of the Archangel named Marcus was curious at to how this town had healed the wounds the crash had inflicted on him and found that through magic, conditions were being treated that were beyond what you would expect from such a low tech level civilization. Kasver meanwhile, wanted to work on some of this devices, and so went to a workshop, here he found and repaired a minigun that the town had come into possession of, he tested it at a firing range and was impressed by its rate of fire.

Suddenly, night fell, despite it being only noon, and voice crept into the thoughts of everyone in the party... and possibly the entire world. It identified itself as The Dark Queen, and offered an ultimatum; if the crew of the Archangel are not surrendered to her by nightfall, she will do unspeakable things to the innocent, and wipe out every settlement in the world.

19/3/18

A trial was held by the various people of power in Elkhaven to decide what to do with the threat of the Dark Queen looming. The party denied that they were angels, but still said they'd like to try and fight the Dark Queen anyway. Ultimately, this led to them being exiled from the town, who wished to avoid the legion of Orcs coming.

Leaving the town gates, the party were surprised to find a band of Dwarven soldiers marching under the banner of a golden hammer. Their captain swore to protect the party from the Dark Queen and led them away to a cave network, which they hope to defend in battle.
