TL;DR: you are a newly enlisted/conscripted pilot who controls a giant mech to defend an interstellar seed ship against alien menace.
Approximately 1000 years ago, human discovered the tachyon particle and succeed in harnessing its awesome power. Tachyon particle could be used as an infinite energy source, propulsion engine, communication method or even weaponry.
However, just after human discovered tachyon particle discovered tachyon and started utilising them, the Gauna came to the Solar System.
Gaunas are giant space-faring shape shifting creatures that utilises Tachyon as a source of food and is attracted to the Solar System where tachyon is being harnessed.
Earth decided that it is impossible to fight against these humongous creatures (most are as big as skyscrapers and Mass Union Ships - an amalgamation of thousands of Gaunas- can reach a few kilometers in size) and thus devised a plan to send out hundreds of Interstellar Seed Ships to colonise the universe, evading the threat of Gaunas). Earth managed to build 500 ships before being destroyed by the Gaunas.
Sidonia is one of these humongous interstellar seed ship launched by humans 1043 years ago. Sidonia shaped like an long octagonal prism and is built through an asteroid. It is covered in ice (for armor purpose) and has 4 main levels: ocean level, safari level, residential level and the engine level. With the length of 35 km and a width of 6 km, Sidonia is home to 1 million people.
Although Sidonia can evade most Gaunas threat with it's two large engine, sometimes a way to fight back against the Gauna and other aliens other from Gaunas is needed.
Sidonia have 3 main weapons:
-Auxiliary rail guns: rail guns with the length of about 500m, they fire a large mass of metal at Gaunas at high speed. However, its speed isn't enough to kill Gaunas but instead is used to nock Gaunas away, buying time for Sidonia to prepare a counterattack.
-Main rail gun: spanning 28 km, nearly the entire length of the ship, this railgun can fire a bullet at a significant fraction of the speed of light. However, shooting it requires disabling the artificial gravity system and introduces significant recoil. Firing it reduces Sidonia's speed by a noticeable amount and causes a lot of structural damage to Sidonia (especially to the residential area).
-Guardians: giant flying mechs controlled by pilots, a guardian is armed with guns and blades to fight Gaunas and aliens. When not fighting, guardians are also used to harvest ice and other resources from asteroids to replenish Sidonia's own store.
You are one of the Guardians Pilots newly enlisted to protect Sidonia.
